Why Sit There James 2012

this piece is based on a poem by my best friend entitled "Why Sit There James," with the instrumental accompaniment first proposed in 2010.

here's the other links:

here's the full text of the poem:

Why Sit There James

Alexander Agena, Jr.

why sit there James forever dead in that black and white pic
forever flicking that half-finished smoke your eyes

dead set on the ember white burn brooding back in our eyes alighting
your image and you are supposed to be a nasty casualty

of a car crash why James always that bored look is the world too
slow like the gramophone that plays the fall in Four Seasons

sighs of the string section swirling below that auburn hair mingling
with the flair of your troubled roles the world troubled in bending

too much you can't see straight that you had it piped once with a pastor full
of sibilance in his speech probably promised you rain and salvation

and all you got was an awakening to a wedging in of Sodom sweet in its sin
yes they talked about it in Larry King Live your sweetheart confirmed

things you had done trashing your room for trusting in strangers for doping
shooting uppers faking talk shows saying driving too fast isn't safe

caring isn't safe you ran like hell the world couldn't follow couldn't swallow
stars like you falling fast and hard your soul cost millions they printed

your pretty face in posters pictures pin-ups up there in heaven Hollywood
where saints and sinners trade places faster than sideswipes happen

in long roads and runways engines revving up and the down the slope of your life
couldn't slant enough to not keep fans from fielding East of Eden full

even then why sit there James why let scumbags take your photograph and remind
us of your pain if you had stared straight we sure couldn't look back

but you couldn't just sit couldn't let Bach cement you to that sofa had to run
had to race time to halt your age to be as fast as you can be rushing

to the point where seconds become infinitesimal the pedals clutch and rubber
enfolding and the gap in everything becomes nothing but an exploding star

The Madsong of Hesus: 2012

this was a piece that we first performed in 2003, when my best friend and i tagged along with my officemate and his friend for a couple of friday night beers in a newly-opened bar in Quezon City. the in-house band was playing acoustic music - a fad during that time - when my friend showed me a poem that he wrote. i was immediately awed by the imagery and thought of an instrumentation that would be a backdrop if ever he decided to read it onstage somewhere.

we mustered enough guts to ask permission from the band to borrow their acoustic guitar and did an impromptu performance while they were on break. the manager liked it and asked us to audition a few weeks later. we went to audition with another group who had obviously more chops than we did, but somehow we landed a "one night only" gig slot where we played a couple of cover songs because we didn't really have any compositions back then, and we saved this piece for last. as souvenirs of that performance as well as the audition and that fateful friday night, i'd like to thank Mr. Leo Laroza for the pictures that he took. i posted these in my facebook:

alas, we didn't have any recorder back then when we performed this piece. fast forward to 2012 - my best friend came back from Singapore, and we decided to nail this down last Sunday. thanks to my old reliable 5-string RJ Stratocaster and his trusty Fender G-Dec amplifier, we were finally able to record a performance of this.

this is the madsong of hesus.

words by Alexander Agena, Jr.
guitar work by Mic Entoma

here's the full text of the poem:

THE MADSONG
OF HESUS

Alexander Agena, Jr.

In the summer of 1999, in Aranque, Manila, a grease-man who goes by the name of Hesus, ran amok, killing a pregnant lady, and wounding several others. Mob of butchers finally caught and killed him with cleavers and ice picks. The total stab wounds were 13, nine of them filled his left chest, forming bloody sinkholes. Inside the coroner’s room hours after his death, a novena booklet with the image of Christ was found, crumpled in his hand.

1.

Rubbish. Flies. Styrofoam. Lies.
Grime leading nowhere fills the esteros.
Not yet with foul meat or bone scraps
Will my stomach be filled. Not yet–my hair
Greased black, an extension of the Pasig river–
With leftover rice from the eatery. (The pregnant owner
Scowled at me in her oily apron. I detested
The way she smirked, the way the knife and the cleaver
Were chafed against each other. This bothers you, she asked.
A bolo was there among the soiled dishes.)
Now I see the grime
Filling the esteros, heading somewhere.
Shimmering ground
Mucks my eyes from the heat; and once more
The doorknob of the mind opens ajar on
A period rhymed with cataclysm.
Perennial and has passed unobserved. Cold winds
Left, and then a summer. I lay among the rubbish
Beside the wet market. Under the scorching sun,
Where my lips, like the season, blistered,
I scraped my Father’s name down to a deeper trash,
My hair greased black, an extension of the Pasig river.

2.

It was like any other street market. Stalls
Hang their meat and other innards. Papayas
Still attract flies. Fish fresh from death
Or seemed to be dead get caught the second time
In plastic nets. Getting awake from the sudden
blaring of horns,
I seemed to see scenes from Galilee, where jeepneys become
Fishing vessels trudging the sea of cements,
and uncoordinated
Music coupled with street-like oration blast
the ears of passengers.
And sometimes I ride it to give them a sermon,
But they always ignore me, the helm-master shouting
Profanities at my grace…Rubbish. Cans.
Flies. Styrofoam. Lies. And, and,
Clean faces, smiling, government faces,
On big boards in the sky, smirking.
The esteros fill with grime, leading nowhere.
I laugh at how strangers become familiar,
Going in and out of the market, plastic
In their hands, plastic in the garbage cans.
I wake to see them at dawn, trading plastic,
As if they go here to worship plastic, just before,
My stomach rumbles, then another vision.

3.

One of them bobbed in the Pasig river one night.
Got dumped from the bridge, tied in plastic rope,
His head covered with plastic sando bag, the radio said–
A messenger, (not one of my angels), a starwitness
Of some government scam, married,
and shining sleek gray-anew
Like an inflated balloon.
I used to get off from jeepneys there,
To look at the river, to see the sea of Galilee. Now the esteros
Fill with grime, leading anywhere. They found
His wife in a bank, claiming blood-money; maybe
She sold him for a fee, she’s only a housewife–
I lay among the rubbish.
Beside the wet market. The jeepneys stop blaring.
She struggled to get out of her store,
Approaching me, in her oily apron. All buoy upstream now.
–And then it dries, cakes, and the horizon forgot to quiver.

4.

I could not intend to smite her,
The pregnant owner of the eatery. But the ground,
Shimmering and passed unobserved,
mucks my eyes from the heat
And shudders like Mount Sinai. I cry to them my sermon:
Not all papayas attract flies! Sermons attract flies!
Why don’t you all give up your stores and stalls because
You can’t stop stomachs from wailing? Those plastic images
Where you put your blood-money and dried jasmines,
like my hair, at its feet–
Put me there, too, among the plastics;
Let me live. Not foul meat, not bone scraps,
Not leftover rice from the eatery. I did not
intend to smite her,
The pregnant owner of the eatery.
I spread the grime at my hair
As the papayas got crushed. Rubbish.
Flies. Lies.–I slashed at her inflated belly like a balloon,
With the bolo from the soiled dishes. She kept on smirking
As her innards and what seemed to be
a live fish splattered out.
So many soiled dishes, all those plates and forks,
And how those familiar strangers
go in and out of the market,
And we can’t even go out, come out,
with plastic in our hands,
Ignoring the profanities against my grace,
hurling street-like oration
In an uncoordinated music, howling, howling, in jeepneys
Trudging like fishing vessels in the cement sea,
While grime fills up Manila, the capital of the world.

i had to shorten the description in my YouTube channel as this write-up would have been too long.

kalabit, kapa, kaskas

this is a chord pattern i was tinkering around with on acoustic guitar, where the D string was missing. at first, i was just curious as to how it will sound, but ended up playing this for several takes.

this is an instrumental accompaniment to my friend alexander agena, jr.'s poem "the madsong of hesus" - a project that started way back in 2003 but up to now still hasn't been "recorded."

this is the third draft of purple kush, and it still has no definite structure. the D string is missing so it means i'm playing a 5-stringer.

this is just a doodle - the title says it all, really. and yes, the D string is still missing.

StarMan vs Great Puma: Best-of-9 Series to Unify the VWA and VWF Titles

this is a video i recorded using the FCEUX Emulator, the Pro Wrestling for NES/Famicom game, and Windows Movie Maker.

my wrestler of choice, StarMan, is the Video Wrestling Association (VWA) champion and has completed defending the belt against Fighter Hayabusa, Kin Corn Karn, Giant Panther, The Amazon, and King Slender. i have uploaded these matches in my YouTube channel, and just in case you want to watch them, here's my link: http://www.youtube.com/user/lambanogpusher

StarMan now faces the Video Wrestling Federation (VWF) champion, Great Puma in a Best of 9 series in order to unify the VWA and VWF titles. in the normal game, there is only one match to unify the belts, with the player being given a rematch if he loses the first match. in this case, i made up a storyline in which the two combatants face each other in 9 possible matches with the stipulation being a race to get 5 wins - whoever accomplishes this will be the unified VWA and VWF champion. i have posted the 9 matches (separately, of course) in my YouTube channel and did this project as a music playlist/video tribute of sorts.

again, this is the pro wrestling geek in me writing. i even went as far as re-arranging the sequence of the matches, depending on the endings, for a supposed dramatic/climactic build-up - i even made a run sheet to get things right, as i didn't want any mistakes. i don't really expect everyone to like this project, but this is just something i am passionate about - if some of my friends are into photography, outdoor activities, coffee, koreanovelas, or harry potter, then i guess i'm just the token professional wrestling nerd. and as weird as it may sound, i enjoy doing a project like this every once in a while because it makes me feel good and alive.

i do not own the songs i have used in making this video, and i am not making any illegal profits by posting this. thus, i have rightfully acknowledged each track used in the last two slides of this work.

at the back of my mind is this song

this is a song by one of my favorite bands, Ash. sobrang nagagandahan lang talaga ako sa kabuuan niya, from the lyrics to the melody to the music. i think that Tim Wheeler and Charlotte Hatherley had a great guitar harmony here. siyempre, solid rhythm section pa rin sina Mark Hamilton and Rick McMurray. sana bumalik sa kanila si Charlotte (wishful thinking). i won't tell you that this is a good song, you just have to listen and be the judge yourself. bottomline is, i love this song. =O)>

Shining Light
Ash

Roman candles that burn in the night,
Yeah, you are a shining light.
You lit a torch in the infinite,
Yeah, you are a shining light.
Yeah, you light up my life.

You have always been a thorn in their side,
But to me you're a shining light.
You arrive and the night is alive,
Yeah, you are a shining light.
Yeah, you light up my life.

We made a connection,
A full on chemical reaction,
Brought by dark divine intervention,
Yeah, you are a shining light.
A constellation once seen,
Over Royal David's city,
An epiphany you burn so pretty,
Yeah, you are a shining light.

You are a force
You are a constant source,
Yeah, you are a shining light.
Incandescent in the darkest night,
Yeah, you are a shining light.
Yeah, you light up my life.

We made a connection,
A full on chemical reaction,
Brought by dark divine intervention,
Yeah, you are a shining light.
A constellation once seen,
Over Royal David's city,
An epiphany you burn so pretty,
Yeah, you are a shining light.

These are the days you often say
There's nothing that we cannot do,
Beneath a canopy of stars
I'd shed blood for you.

We made a connection,
A full on chemical reaction,
Brought by dark divine intervention,
Yeah, you are a shining light.
A constellation once seen,
Over Royal David's city,
An epiphany you burn so pretty,
Yeah, you are a shining light,
Yeah, you light up my life.
Yeah you are a shining light,
Yeah you light up my life.

purple kush: revised, 10-3-2010

i posted this revised version on my YouTube channel earlier. here's the link and a short write-up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy9VF0LcY38

this is a revised version of purple kush - a video i made a week before - with a basic structure. i decided to do this with a clean tone, i.e., no overdrive effect, as i like to have it as stripped down to the basic as possible. my playing still sucks, but this isn't final yet so just cut me some slack.

purple kush

posted this on my YouTube channel earlier. here's the link and a short write-up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ya0UIfulZ0

this is another song idea but i haven't decided on the final structure yet. i was just tinkering with this E chord and somehow came up with a rough pattern. i couldn't come up with a title so i decided to use "purple kush" - i've been playing this game in Facebook called Pot Farm and it's the highest strain of marijuana that i've unlocked - i have no idea if it's a real variety or just a fictional one. anyway, i put two different rough takes together - the first was unplugged as i was just tinkering around, and the second was done with an amplifier and overdrive effect (the effects settings was just done on a whim, with no reference whatsoever)

welcoming the new, but keeping the old

pa-pampam ang import function ng Multiply albums kaya i had to do this the hard way. ito yung album na inupload ko sa Facebook kanina lang:

just a few snapshots of my guitars and amplifiers:

Dimitri (my old reliable RJ Stratocaster)

Pot-Pot (my old Dean Markley K20BX amplifier)

Juno (my newly-acquired Fender Stratocaster)

and Nicky (my newly-acquired Dean Markley K20X amplifier)

i bought my new babies from Packy, and it was worth every centavo. =O)>

p.s. the album title was based on a speech by Dr. Steve Rood on SWS' 25th anniversary celebration - i myself have been with the institution for about 10 years now.

Dreamscapes: the documentary (well, sort of)

as the title suggests, this is a documentary of the song "Dreamscapes," with the music being Kiko's idea and the lyrics and melody by Alex. i originally posted it here back in March 5, 2009.

here are the lyrics:

Dreamscapes

as soon as you're alone, you never have to worry 'bout the monsters in the closet and the nightmares you've been keeping to yourself.
I don't know how you do it but I never can, never can reveal it, yeah

and yeah I can't do it like you, yeah
yeah I can't do it like you, yeah
I can't do it like you, yeah
I can't do it like you
do it like you do it now, you do it and you do it

Keep away from trouble.
The dreamscapes are illusions but they are all true, all are true inside of you.
Never let me see them. Your eyes are terrifying, they are so untrue, but they're enough to burn me and

yeah I can't do it like you, yeah
yeah I can't do it like you, yeah
I can't do it like you, yeah
I can't do it like you
do it like you do it now, you do it and you do it

Bob Hope? Have Hope.

i had quite a difficult time with this particular video as i incorporated notes, thoughts and recommendations to the documentary itself. they forced me to play the intro/main lick almost throughout the whole song. Alex did the vocals and rhythm/lead parts in of the verses and chorus, while Kiko did bass duties. the cover photo was taken by Alex, by the way - i originally intended to use some of his sketches as cover art, but maybe i'll do that in the future. nothing much to write here, as the text are embedded in the video itself - which had a total run time of almost 30 minutes. i lifted this excerpt from a previous post as a brief description, as well as the corresponding link:

"this is another song penned by Alex, entitled DMZ GMZ Song in his original YouTube demo. i don't know what his title for this song really is, although i suggested "Bob Hope." he entitled this jam "Have hope," obviously. they forced me to play the main lick - i used Waya, my Cebu guitar for this "sabit-sabit" experience. Kiko did the bass duties using Pepe, my bass, plugged into my amplifier Pot-Pot. Alex did vocal duties and played "pogi guitar" using Kiko's Ibanez. this video was recorded using Alex's Nokia phone - as to why he placed the camera near my balls is beyond me - go ask him yourself. obviously, this is still a rough take - maybe we'd be able to record a more decent version in the future."

these are the lyrics from Alex:

Sometimes it's easy to break down than fight for your life,
dooroorootdoootdoomdoom.
They say, it's easy to fade, away, than burn out damn right.

You can't deny it.
Got to be it.
You cannot let us down.
Have hope, dooroorootdoootdoomdoom.

Baby, you have to got to climb now, out of that hole,
dooroorootdoootdoomdoom.
Let me take away the pain now and save you from yourself,
dooroorootdoootdoomdoom.

it's Like Hate but don't get it wrong

i've been working on this documentary video of Alex's song "Like Hate" all day and managed to finish just a couple of hours ago. i couldn't post this on YouTube or Facebook because of their restrictions so Multiply was the best and obvious choice. when i first heard this song, i thought it stood out from Alex's compositions at that time - the first acoustic version i heard was posted on his YouTube channel on February 16, 2009, and i got hooked. we jammed the song on February 22, 2009 (a Sunday afternoon) at Kiko and Mai's house - it had been a while since we last played, sometime in August 2005 to be somewhat accurate. i wrote about this session in one of my posted videos:

i have been making documentary videos of some songs because i want to tell the story of how we channel some of our creative / artistic energy and frustrations through this outlet called music. i admit that we probably suck big-time, in addition to not having any handsome members whom the girls could swoon at - at best, Alex resembles Dante Basco (of Hook, The Debut and Take the Lead fame) while Kiko is a deadringer for Craig Montoya (of Everclear and Tri-Polar fame). on second thought, maybe a couple of girls would swoon at us, if given the correct amount of alcohol. even if we don't have enough chops talent-wise, i get very excited every time we're able to get together and make original music / songs, as it's more fulfilling than being able to play your favorite cover songs - after all, it's OUR material, not somebody else's. the three of us also had this agreement that any composition by any of us should not be restricted to any particular genre - a no limits perspective if you will - basta original material, walang diskriminasyon. by extension, i really appreciate and respect artists who make and perform their original compositions dahil ginagamit nila nang tama ang talento nila.

again, i'm proud to share this low-fi video with all of you - in all its DIY glory - thank God for making punk rock influence our lives. i've also included Alex's lyrics below:

Like Hate

I keep wondering what's this all about. I keep on messing things based on what I need to say.
The morning clock has done its ticking, the train has stopped to pick the mob,
the jeeps and bus have all departed and I am left to steal your love.

I've consulted all the freer gods. Power left them nothing but human race is here to stay,
the heartbeats are all ablazing, the souls have known to dance and sway
the fiery love you never knew is now raging on and raging still like hate, hate. hate.

Oh Manila I can't figure out. You have scared the luck I keep locked inside the heart of me.
Your churches never smell but ruins, your streets are filled with and grief.
And I'd been left to rot and wander, still in love with you and yet I hate, hate, hate.

Though we know in time, though we know in time.
You'll be mine, you'll be mine. And we always hope
till the sacred day, sacred day.

a song called Drown

i tried uploading this video earlier in my YouTube channel, but i had to make a shorter edit as the original exceeded 10 minutes. here's the original version, the URL of the YouTube edit, the original write-up as it appeared on my channel as well as the tags:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6P_tCFhdwA

this song is a pet project of mine, with the idea for the music starting as early as 1999 during my college days. along with my friends Alex and Kiko, we tried to make a basic arrangement of this song, with my chord progression, Alex's melody and Kiko's additional guitars. i told Alex the story about this girl friend i liked so much that i felt like i was drowning in her, and then he wrote the most amazing lyrics that hit the bull's eye - it was like he read my exact thoughts, how i was feeling. of course, he wrote in his channel that he's dedicating it to his "one," but i still say that he wrote my exact feelings in his lyrics. here's the original link in Alex's channel, as well as the lyrics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oiEvzaZ9ks

Intro

Verse 1:
Here I go again, I'm taking a path where no one else would go. I know it's killing me.
Just got my broken heart refixed for me. Well I don't care, when you are there.

Refrain 1:
I'm drowning in you. Swirling deep in your pool.
I'm lost but not a fool. I'm drowning in you.

Chorus 1:
Hey hear me out
Hey hear me out
There is no next time
Hey hear me out
I'm freezing like a fool. I'm drowning in you.

Interlude

Verse 2:
Hey there listen girl I know you will say what can never be. Like a day without a sun, like a
dream without a space, yeah
But what I'm trying to say is that you are the fire that's burning me inside. It's all right.

Refrain 2:
I'm drowning in you. Swirling deep in your pool.
I'm lost without a clue. I'm drowning in you.

Chorus 2:
Hey hear me out
Hey hear me out
There is no next time
Hey hear me out
I'm freezing like a fool. I'm drowning in you.

Chorus 3:
Hey hear me out
Hey hear me out
Hey hear me out
Hey hear me out

Chorus 4:
Hey hear me out
Hey hear me out
There is no next time
Hey hear me out
I'm lost but not a fool. I'm drowning in you.

Resurrecting Golden Girls from the Grave

this is the first song i heard from Alex and Kiko sometime in 2004, and i immediately got hooked in its melody – like a Last Song Syndrome thing. the lyrics were written by Alex and the music was written by Kiko – and while this song had been criticized for lack of structure, to me it can be a sleeper hit by a not-so-handsome pair of guys who could easily pass for Dante Basco and Craig Montoya. after i heard it back then, i immediately wrote down the chord progression on a piece of paper so that i could learn to play it myself. about five years later, armed with the only surviving recording of the song, Alex and Kiko tried to reconstruct the song – recalling the music and lyrics while repeatedly listening to the recording which was a couple of minutes away from completely dying. i provided rhythm guitar work on the 4th take – the only good take, by the way – while Alex did the vocals and Kiko did lead guitar work. ironically, Kiko was the one messing up on the first three takes, probably getting pressured by the rolling camera. the following notes about the song’s history were written by Alex in his YouTube channel:

“this is an attempt to resuscitate golden girls from the grave. golden girls was the first collaboration made by this group and the song is approximately 2-3 years old. it was criticised for lack of structure and merit thereof. the original song was recorded using a software so we could put in another track for the second voice.

the origin of the song itself came from our decrepit landlady who is trying to hold on to her glory days as a sort of sumptuous society girl in her own right, what with her skimpy attires and vaudeville-like make up while on the verge of fighting it out with father time. the lyrics itself doesn't really makes sense. i think it was part influenced by the fungi-filled odor of our room in evangelista coming from the horrendous shoes and eat-me-i-want-to-die medyas of a person we're just gonna name g-force.”

here’s the link of the good take as well as the lyrics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aSXbYq18Dk

coming out of nowhere calls of bleak and blue swirl like candlesmoke
and we can feel serenity giving up our safety valves
heart that seeks the same old breeze
causing our hearts to beat in one causality

we are one, none still none, we are sons of salt and slush

no one knows but you and me
we can plead reality
and we can feel serenity
giving up our safety valves
heart that speaks the same old breeze
melting our souls to beat in one causality

pangangamusta: a draft love letter

sinilip kita sa webpage mo, mukhang okay ka naman today. wala lang, masaya lang ako 'pag nakikita ka - be it online or in person. i know that this may be awkward, pero nami-miss kita. there's too much i can't say to you, at kahit gustuhin ko man ay pinipigilan ako ng possibility na baka lalong maging weird ang pakiramdam.

ayaw kitang ilagay sa alanganin, although minsan siguro ay nailalagay kita doon nang hindi ko namamalayan o sinasadya. hindi naman siguro tayo ganun ka-close, pero magkaibigan naman tayo di ba? kaya ako, nag-subscribe ako sa isang litanyang sinabi ng isa nating kaibigan: "better this way, than no way at all." oo, ayaw kong mapalayo ka... kahit pa-pira-piraso at patingi-tingi, dinadaan ko na lang sa pagsusulat, status message, pag-post ng link, videoke, gitara, at sa pagbasa at pag-like paminsan-minsan ng mga entries mo ang nararamdaman ko - i try not to overdo it, kasi baka minsan nagmumukha akong pa-pansin. if i put you in awkward situations at times, patawarin mo ako - hindi ko sinasadya.

i'm not asking you to like me. i'm just asking you to understand that someone like me can fall for you. and i'm just this guy who is "torpe-at-heart" (again, a friend coined this term) na "natotorpe sa babaeng totoong napupusuan niya" (another friend wrote something like this), at ang babaeng yun ay ikaw.

p.s. the song title in the first paragraph sounds like your name, and sometimes i wonder that maybe it was written for you. it (the song) is from an album entitled "futures."

Mike Swift - Lagi Kong Kasama feat. Artstrong

God bless, everyone.

Why Sit There James Take 2

this idea occured to me nang bigla akong magising ng madaling-araw a few days ago. i tried to go back to sleep, but i ended up reading this book of poems that i had. i opened a page at random and proceeded to read on. my best friend Alex's poem "Why Sit There James" was included in that compilation. even though i have read it before, i gave it another look that time. after reading the last line, i suddenly realized that maybe it could be read aloud with some music in the background. so i started playing a chord progression i've been tinkering with for several years but haven't really used for anything other than wrist exercise.

i told Alex about this idea a couple of nights ago thru YM, and i also promised to work something out so he could listen to this idea of mine. siyempre, pinadalhan na naman ako ng mga "art film excerpts" ni gago at kung anu-ano pang shit.

gaya ng nasabi ko sa previous video, dapat kahapon ko pa ito i-re-record kaso kinailangan kong mag-work pa sa office - crunch time na kasi itong mga panahong ito kaya marahil ay napapansin ninyong wala ako sa sirkulasyon lately. or maybe hindi ninyo rin napapansin, i couldn't really tell.

the previous video was quite messed up dahil maraming sabit-sabit. i tried to improve a bit on this take but nothing is final yet. salamat na lang dahil i was able to figure out how to record using a webcam and our desktop PC.

ito nga pala yung tula ni Alex:

Why Sit There James

why sit there James forever dead in that black and white pic
forever flicking that half-finished smoke your eyes

dead set on the ember white burn brooding back in our eyes alighting
your image and you are supposed to be a nasty casualty

of a car crash why James always that bored look is the world too
slow like the gramophone that plays the fall in Four Seasons

sighs of the string section swirling below that auburn hair mingling
with the hair of your troubled roles the world troubled in bending

too much you can't see straight that you had it piped once with a pastor full
of sibilance in his speech probably promised you rain and salvation

and all you got was an awakening to a wedging in of Sodom sweet in its sin
yes they talked about it in Larry King Live your sweetheart confirmed

things you had done trashing your room for trusting in strangers for doping
shooting uppers faking talk shows saying driving too fast isn't safe

caring isn't safe you ran like hell the world couldn't follow couldn't swallow
stars like you falling fast and hard your soul cost millions they printed

your pretty face in posters pictures pin-ups up there in heaven Hollywood
where saints and sinners trade places faster than sideswipes happen

in long roads and runways engines revving up and down the slope
of your life
couldn't slant enough to not keep fans from fielding East of Eden full

even then why sit there James why let scumbags take your photograph
and remind
us of your pain if you had stared straight we sure couldn't have looked back

but you couldn't just sit couldn't let Bach cement you to that sofa had
to run
had to race time to halt your age to be as fast as you can be rushing

to the point where seconds become infinitesimal the pedals clutch and
rubber
enfolding and the gap in everything becomes nothing but an exploding star

Why Sit There James Take 1

this is a rough take of a proposed instrumentation for my best friend Alex's poem "Why Sit There James." i was supposed to do this yesterday, but i needed to work so it got a bit delayed. maraming sabit-sabit, sensya na - ngarag pa yata talaga ang utak at diwa ko.

my 2009 in pictures and words, part 1

got this idea from Tin. i still have to write part 2, though.

at the beginning of 2009, i was writing a story about how these valuables of mine (all of which i named) played a role in my year 2008. alas, it’s already 2010 and i haven’t finished that story yet. i got the idea of naming my valuables from a couple of friends whom I met in 2008 (Mon, Cher and Joyce) – being the primitive being that i was, i didn’t even know such an idea existed. in time, i hope to tell you the stories and memories i shared with monty, pola, stinger & flair, waya, pepe, dimitri, fifi, and pot-pot. they’re not expensive, but their sentimental value to me is beyond what money can buy. ayun.

it is what i say it is: A One of a Kind Valentine's Weekend. ang mga larawang ito ay pawang mga kuha ni Abet, mula sa HABFest sa Pampanga, sa Isdaan at Tacsiyapo Wall sa Tarlac, hanggang sa Anawangin sa Zambales. kung nasanay akong natutulog lang sa tuwing sumasapit ang Feb. 14, this definitely changed it. from a late arrival at the HABFest, to a great lunch at Isdaan, to a much-needed release of steam at the Tacsiyapo Wall, to chillax moments and fun pictorials at Anawangin, to the return to the HABFest grounds, it was all worth it. it’s pretty obvious, but I’ll say it anyway: i really had a great time dito. i never thought a Valentine’s Day Weekend would be this special for someone like me – and i owe it to all of them. a few realizations afterwards: sina Meimei at Nona pala ang reincarnation ng WEA Twins, sina Mahal at Mura pala ay talagang cutie-cute-cute ayon kay Monmon, at masarap kumain ng Honey Mustard na Pik-nik nang nakahiga sa beach at nakikipagkulitan sa mga makukulit at mga adik na pa-fall.

these sessions right here are the highlight of my 2009 in terms of my inclination towards music and my artistic tendencies / aspirations. somehow, three straight Sundays namin nakuhang magkita-kita sa bahay nina Kiko at Mai sa Tandang Sora at mag-arrange ng songs na isinulat ni Alex at mag-dry run ng ilang ideas ni Kiko at yung isang idea ko for a song na 1999 ko pa naisip pero di naman ako marunong mag-lapat ng words sa chord progressions kaya it remained an idea for so long. ang naging resulta ay mga Do-It-Yourself video recordings ng “Like Hate,” Have Hope,” “Dreamscapes,” ang resurrected na “Golden Girls” nina Alex at Kiko na isa sa aking personal favorites (2004 pa siya na-compose at muntik nang mabaon sa limot dahil nawala halos lahat ng existing back-ups niya), at ang brainchild kong “Drown” na ginawan ni Alex ng swaktong lyrics at nai-finalize ang arrangement. some of these are posted in my Multiply blog with their respective stories / backgrounds. masaya ako dahil pwede pa rin pala kaming gumawa ng original compositions at di lang basta mang-gaya sa ibang grupo – kasi dati puro nauuwi lang sa pagco-cover ang bawat “jamming” at hindi man lang ma-explore ang new ideas. maraming salamat kina Alex at Kiko at buhay pa rin ang rock and roll. ang sarap kasi puro tugtugan lang, wala nang bullshit, just a free and unlimited expression of ideas – napag-usapan kasi naming tatlo na walang discrimination or limitations in terms of the genre na pwedeng i-compose, basta original ideas lang. siyempre nauwi din sa inuman at masinsinang kwentuhan ang pagtatapos ng 2nd and 3rd sessions – sobrang na-miss ko ‘tong dalawang kaibigan kong ‘to na bihira ko nang makita dahil parehong busy at pamilyado na. about the “name” in the photo, na-coin ko lang yan during a YM conversation with Alex much later – it’s not an official name whatsoever, pero bawal pa ring nakawin (feeling! hahaha!) – kasi sabi niya dati na parang napaka-cheesy daw nung ibang songs na isinusulat niya, para daw siyang cheese factory. hence, the name popped up in my head and i coined the name The Strange Case Of The Robert Smegma Dick Cheese Factory – Robert Smegma being an alias used often by Alex sa kanyang mga prank emails sa aming magbabarkada. sadly, on indefinite hold na naman ang aming mga karir dahil sa kanya-kanyang mga commitments. the good news is, there’s tangible proof of the existence of these ideas / unfinished songs na karamihan ay kay Alex pero may mangilan-ngilan din kaming ideas ni Kiko. miss na rin namin sina Archie at Ajel, at pati si Papa Abet *wink wink* sa mga harutan / tugtugan kaya sana balang araw eh magka-sama-sama naman kami sa dyugdyugan, este, sa tugtugan pala. =O)>

during holy week, i went back to where it all began – Ilocos. “it” meaning my friendships with most of you, my RACE friends =O)>. for those of you who don’t know, the first RACE tour was in Ilocos during holy week of 2007. doon ko nakilala sina… alam na nila kung sino sila, hehehe. even if it was a take two, it had an extended itinerary kaya mas maraming napuntahan. although the collage were from pictures taken with my paltik camera, nag-part-time models din kami ni Clint para kay Abet. i met some great people here: Amy, Eric, Jigs and Nina – na naka-inuman namin at naka-kwentuhan tungkol sa kung anu-anong mga bagay, including mga palabas sa TV nung kabataan namin – kung anu-ano yung mga palabas na yun, eh hindi ko na sasabihin kasi malamang alam na nung mga ka-edad naming magbabasa nito. nung pauwi na, saka lang ako naka-gala nang mabuti sa Calle Crisologo at maganda talaga siya – at masarap uminom ng beer dahil sa classic na ambience niya. nakita ko pa ang mga kaibigan kong sina Aileen at Ahmed kaya napasarap ang kwentuhan habang nagbe-beer kami nina Abet, King, Clint at ang mga bagong kakilala. sulit na trip ‘to, as always (at siyempre, nakabili na naman ako ng bagnet at longganisa para pambaon ko, hehehe).

this was my friend Anne’s wedding to her fiance, Loy. this was held in Clark, Pampanga last April 18, 2009, which also happens to be my Father’s birthday. being the good father that my Tatay Louie is, naintindihan niya kung bakit kailangan kong pumunta sa Pampanga that day. siyempre, kasama ko si best friend Alex (hindi si Bembol Roco yan, fyi) at mabuti na lang at natagpuan namin ang Chapel nila – although late na kami sa ceremony. so, we just behaved ourselves at the back seats. it’s pretty obvious that i cannot take a decent shot with my camera even if my life depended on it kaya ganito ang mga kuha. bakit siya highlight? it’s because Anne and i have a somewhat peculiar friendship. we were classmates in college – i entered UP in 1995 and she in 1996. in fact, we were even in a Sociology organization together but we were never really close until 2004 – that was when i got her number thru a friend of hers who knew Aileen (see previous paragraph). one text message led to an exchange of jokes, how-are-you’s, stories from way back. during college, our conversations were limited to the usual hi’s and hello’s, so when we communicated thru SMS, that’s the time when we developed a closeness which was ironic because we were miles away from each other – after all, Pampanga and Rizal are pretty far apart. telecommunications is a good thing, indeed. by the way, one of Anne’s roommates in college was my first girlfriend, Sherryl – she’s also married and has a child. going back to the topic, when i met my second girlfriend, Vanessa, in 2005, Anne and i had lost SMS contact for about a year or so. ironically, Anne was one of the first people who asked me how i was in early 2007, a couple  of months after Vanessa broke up with me – so she was also one of the few people to whom i confided to when i was having a rough time. to make a long story short, Anne was the angel when i was fighting my own personal demons – she helped me deal with my sorrow a whole lot easier just by being there to listen and talk to. kung si Alex ang best male friend ko, si Anne would be one of my closest female friends – kaya nung ikasal siya, i was happy for her and Loy. pagbalik namin ni Alex sa Manila, dumiretso kami sa bahay at nag-inuman at nagkuwentuhan tungkol sa kung anu-anong mga bagay, pati yung tungkol sa mga kababaihan sa buhay ko, including… ay teka, naalala ko bigla: si Anne pala yung angel sa “angelic” blog entry ko… para sa mga curious =O)>.

Juskonaman! hahahaha! =O)>
